The historical development of the three squares with their changing uses led to an illegibility of the sequence of squares after the Second World War.
In order to anchor the squares in the urban context and to achieve a generous totality, the entire surface of the squares is covered with a uniform natural stone paving. On top of this is a meandering line made of white concrete, which accompanies each square and transforms depending on its location or function. The individual squares are also given a special atmosphere that works with the historical references.
To give Rathenauplatz an independent identity, a grid of water vapor nozzles is embedded in the ground as an immaterial fountain whose location is perceived diffusely. At night, a light spot marks the location of the former Mercury Fountain. The Goetheplatz forms the centre of the square sequence due to its familiarity and historical continuity as a green square. The reference to Goethe is established on the one hand by the return of the monument and on the other hand by a light tree roof, which takes up the reference to the former fourfold row of trees.
The Rossmarkt, always a traffic place, is dominated by the Gutenberg monument. This square-dominating structure will continue to be given the necessary visual space. The existing slope situation additionally enables the staging of the place by keeping the course of the square on one level and introducing a sloping staircase at the eastern edge - an open urban space is created.
